People always ask is there a difference between the two ferry options to and from Cozumel... The answer is YES!!!
A little bit about each company: Ultramar vs Winjet
Ultramar
The high-speed catamaran type ferry is 157 ft and is constructed with 3 decks and a capacity for 800 passengers. There is an indoor air-conditioned seating area or open-air outdoor seating. It features panoramic views, a snack bar, live music, a kid's play area, a special area for people who have pets, electrical outlets, and restrooms for ladies, gentlemen, and families.
The Ultramar also has a VIP area that is luxurious, spacious, and features comfortable couches with tables.
Winjet
Winjet has a fleet of 2 waterjet-type vessels with a capacity of 400 passengers, the Mexico IV and Mexico V. The Winjet also has air-conditioned indoor seating, open-air outdoor seating, a snack bar, restrooms, and a special area for people with pets.
(This ferry does not rock out with live music.)
The motion of the Ocean!
Size does make a difference because the size and shape of the boats affect how stable they are during the crossing. Typically the Ultramar is more stable, so if you don't like the motion of the ocean and feeding the fish, this is the way to go. Where should you sit on the boat to minimize the rocking? You'll want to try to get on the lowest level and in the center. There are also a couple of things you can take to help. Ginger pills and Dramamine can be found in pretty much any pharmacy in Playa del Carmen or Cozumel.
Food & Beverage
If you forgot to pack your cooler and snacks, no worries. Both have a full bar and basic snacks like chips, cookies, and candy bars. In the case that you don't want to get out of your seat, there is always someone to bring it to you. but be prepared, the prices are quite a bit more than what you'll find at the Oxxo or 7-11.
What about pets?
Most of us love our pets as if they were our children and can't imagine the thought of not taking them on vacation with us. Whether they are just along for the ride with us, an emotional support animal, or a medical support animal, both companies allow you to take your animal. For people with dogs, there is a special seating area. The difference is that on the Winjet you have to muzzle your pups, no matter the size. If you don't have one, you can buy one at the ticket booth.
Cats must be transported in crates and kept in the luggage area.
THERE IS NO EXTRA FEE TO TAKE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS!
